Global Terminal and New York Container
Terminal to Install smartGATE® and Intelligent Camera®
ALAMEDA, CA - July 17, 2004 - -
Embarcadero Systems Corporation (ESC) announced today that
two East Coast terminals of the Orient Overseas (International)
Limited group have selected ESC's smartGATE suite and Intelligent
Camera system to manage their gate operations. ESC's gate
technologies will be deployed for the inbound, outbound, and
security gates at Global Terminal and Container Services,
Inc. in Jersey City and at New York Container Terminal (NYCT),
formerly Howland Hook Container Terminal, on Staten Island.
The implementation of ESC's smartGATE and Intelligent Camera
is part of a major terminal and technology upgrade. This upgrade
will ensure Global Terminal's and NYCT's position as vital
facilities in the greater East Coast logistics market, allowing
them to be positioned to efficiently handle the growth projected
for the Port of NY/NJ.
ESC's smartGATE technologies will manage
inbound and outbound gates at both terminals, converting the
gates from a manual operation to a uniquely integrated and
technologically advanced gate system. Global Terminal's and
NYCT's gates will incorporate card readers capable of reading
the Port's SeaLINK® identification cards, close circuit
television (CCTV) camera technology, and advanced audio technologies
with ESC's state of the art pedestal technology. The smartGATE
suite will enable these terminals to relocate their clerks
from separate gate booths into a centralized gate control
center and allow truck drivers to remain in their truck cabs
as their vehicle is processed through the facilities. smartGATE
will provide Global Terminal and NYCT with faster turn times,
increased gate efficiency and velocity, and better customer
service.
"The smartGATE suite along with Intelligent
Camera will streamline our gate processes and have a positive
economic effect to our facility while improving overall throughput
and gate transaction time," said Frank Scollo, Vice President
of NYCT.
In addition to the smartGATE technology,
Global Terminal and NYCT will be installing ESC's container
and chassis identification technology, Intelligent Camera.
By utilizing existing CCTV gate cameras to capture container
and chassis numbers, Intelligent Camera will provide Global
Terminal and NYCT with the capability of verifying containers
against terminal operating system data. The system's accuracy
will provide the terminals with an accurate and automated
system, further enhancing their smartGATE suite.
"With ESC's Intelligent Camera technology,"
stated James Kukucka, Executive VP of Global Terminal, "we
are able to deploy affordable, container identification technology
at each gate that is perfectly scaled to our operations. The
system is simple, affordable and non-intrusive to our gate
footprint."
Beginning in this fall, ESC's smartGATE
and Intelligent Camera will be installed at nine inbound and
six outbound lanes at Global Terminal's facility. Additionally,
ESC's systems will be installed at nine inbound and six outbound
lanes at NYCT's facilities in Staten Island. Combined with
the in-gates and out-gates, ESC will be providing both bobtail
lane and security lane pedestals.
"We are excited to become a technology
partner to Global Terminal and NYCT," said Bill Peterson
of ESC. "With the smartGATE suite and Intelligent Camera
deployments, Global Terminal and NYCT will have the most affordable
and advanced gate technologies on the East Coast."
