Increasing Return of Investment with VASTAC® The Better, More Affordable Gate Solution

ALAMEDA, CA - September 22, 2003 - Embarcadero Systems Corporation (ESC) announced today a development strategy to leverage its clients' infrastructure by adding new capabilities to existing terminal equipment and systems. This enables ESC clients to do more by extending the useful life of their current IT investment.

They can rapidly "leapfrog" to the latest capabilities rather than waiting for the process of evolution to run its course. "Today, terminal operators face issues that go beyond their fences," says William Peterson, ESC's Director of Systems Integration. "Security, congestion, and the environment are community issues that ports are being forced to address; and ESC is extending customer value by enhancing existing systems to address these problems."

Peterson explains that various ESC components are tied together through the Terminal Operating System and the Internet, thus expanding the functionality of the entire VASTAC™ gate solution. ESC's standardized architecture facilitates plug-and-play integration and ensures interoperability. Therefore, simple cameras and intercom systems, which most clients already have, can be easily enhanced to deliver extraordinary results. This enables the collection of as much information as possible prior to the gate clerk interacting with the truck driver.

In this scenario, the integrated VASTAC product line enables centralized, remote processing of trucks as they arrive at a terminal. Capabilities include:

  • Gate and Yard Pedestals - For audio and video communication between truckers and clerks
  • Vastac c500 Console - For data interface and control of all audio, video and data equipment
  • Gate-pass Dispensers and Collectors - For dispensing and collecting bar-coded tickets
  • Yard Cameras - For remote monitoring of the yard

This enhanced solution benefits terminal operators through:

  • Improved productivity
  • Enhanced safety
  • Stronger security
  • Support for concurrent data collection and trucker validation
  • Remote control enabled through use of cameras

"As technology changes, terminal operators need greater integration and more automated processes from beginning to end. So our goal is to optimize the entire supply chain, populating it with as much information as possible," says Peterson. "To improve security, reduce congestion, and reduce the impact of terminals on the environment while driving down the cost-per-move, it is necessary to connect disparate entities in order to form a port eco-system. The introduction of technology and the sharing of information is an important step in that progression."
