Embarcadero Systems Corp Releases smartGATE™ and Intelligent Camera™, Increasing Port and Terminal Efficiency

FT. LAUDERDALE, Florida - November 17, 2003 - Embarcadero Systems Corporation (ESC) announced today the debut of its smartGATE™ terminal access solution featuring ESC's Intelligent Camera™ technology. ESC's smartGATE uses an integrated set of tools to optimize terminal operational efficiency and speed trucker turn times. With ESC's extremely accurate Intelligent Camera system, terminal operators can use their closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems to address terminal efficiency at its heart - the gate - where the burden and complexity of scheduling, security, and logistics surround the transfer of containers. For high-volume terminal operators, Intelligent Camera increases the accuracy of existing Optical Character Recognition (OCR) portals: For lower-volume terminal operators, it can be used as a data collection solution.

"Increasing terminal efficiency and saving money is a smart solution," says Bill Peterson, ESC's Director of Systems Integration. Peterson continues, "smartGATE™ is a suite of hardware and software that propels your existing terminal systems into the future with the newest in electronic data collection and validation technologies. smartGATE provides centralized, remote processing of gate transactions for intermodal facilities, resulting in improved productivity, operator safety and facility security.

A key module of smartGATE is Intelligent Camera™, an engineering innovation for Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) that provides an effective and affordable terminal data collection solution. "Although Intelligent Camera is a module of smartGATE, it can be incorporated into any gate system, as long as the terminal has CCTV systems installed at the terminal gate," explains Peterson.

Steven G. Lautsch, ESC's Senior Vice President adds, "Intelligent Camera technology represents an incremental option to an OCR portal system for high-volume terminals. Terminal operators can implement this capability without effecting their existing infrastructure or space requirements. Intelligent Camera increases terminal efficiency where data accuracy is a critical element to streamlining terminal operations. Including Intelligent Camera to the mix enables terminal operators to obtain additional container and chassis reads, increasing overall data capture accuracy from the low 90s, without Intelligent Camera, to the high 90s with Intelligent Camera."*

In addition, Intelligent Camera is a cost effective data collection alternative for the low-density terminal. For lower-volume terminal operators, Intelligent Camera offers a low-cost data collection solution bearing attractive results. Intelligent Camera uses current CCTV equipment and existing infrastructure, giving terminal operators the benefits of automatic data collection without the complexity and added cost of new OCR Portal systems. ___________________________________________ *Accuracy is measured as a percentage of total throughput.
