Embarcadero Systems Corp. Launches New Data Logging and Inspection Hardware and Software Suite for Container Terminals

ALAMEDA, CA (USA) - January 3, 2006 - Embarcadero Systems Corp. (ESC), a global provider of innovative transportation technology solutions, has launched a new product that will optimize terminal security and increase productivity at marine container terminals.

ESC smartLOG is a data logging and image-capture inspection system designed to enable container inspection and security audit capability. This hardware and software suite of programs serves two primary purposes: operational efficiency and increased security.

Operationally, ESC smartLOG saves the marine terminals labor and lost/damaged cargo claims costs. The ESC smartLOG archive of captured images of inbound and outbound containers provides information about the containers’ physical condition. The Optical Character Recognition (OCR) data capture serves as a secondary audit of inventory as it cross-references with the Terminal Operating System (TOS). As the container passes through the ESC smartLOG Portal upon entering and exiting the terminal, motion-sensitive cameras digitally capture images that are indexed in the ESC smartLOG database, using data elements such as date, time, and container number.

The ESC smartLOG server then interprets the images, records them to a database and assembles these images into a complete container while the container passes through the portal. The need for routine in-lane human visual inspection is thereby eliminated. This system enables damaged containers to be managed on an exception-only basis. By removing from the lanes inspection personnel using a manual process, ESC smartLOG increases both productivity as well as safety in the terminal.

Additionally, ESC smartLOG provides security by deterring intermodal cargo theft and managing inventory discrepancies. By recording the present conditions in the terminal at the time a container exits the terminal, ESC smartLOG enables terminal operators to identify how and when a container incorrectly exits the terminal. As a result, terminal claims costs decrease as the system enables the identification of responsible personnel.

Currently, the ESC smartLOG suite is being used at the Ben E. Nutter Container Terminal in Oakland, Calif., and will be operating in multiple ports in early 2006.

For more than 25 years, ESC has been developing, integrating, and deploying transportation technology systems and solutions that enhance, automate and secure maritime and multimodal transportation operations for virtually every vertical, including ocean, rail, multimodal, breakbulk, trucking, and automotive terminals. These solutions concentrate on three main logistics functions: Terminal Automation, Transportation Security, and Finished Vehicle Logistics. Its family of products includes ESC VinTelligent™ that optimizes vehicle handling; ESC smartGATE™ for gate automation and facility security; ESC VoyagerTrack® that provides cargo tracking and visibility; ESC Premier Appointment System™ to improve gate efficiency and trucker scheduling; ESC webTAMS® for real-time steamship cargo management and status; CATOS for highly integrated marine and intermodal terminal management and operations; and ESC smartLOG™, a data logging and surveillance system.
